PSU Down, Tougher Foes to Go

The West Virginia wrestling team is off to an excellent start in 2002 after defeating Penn State, but even more difficult foes remain for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers were very impressive as they clicked off six straight wins during the match against the 17th ranked Nittany Lions, but even greater challenges remain for the talented West Virginia squad.

In most sports, a win over the a top 20 team is a highlight for the season. To be sure, that's an excellent accomplishment, but in the tough Eastern Wrestling League, top twenty matchups are commonplace.

Down the road, WVU will face Lock Haven, Pitt, Edinboro and up and coming Virginia Tech in EWL wars. Throw in non-conference battles with Ohio State, Nebraska, Virginia and Buffalo, and there's no doubt that the Mountaineers should be well seasoned by the EWL championships on March 8 and 9.

Edinboro, Lock Haven and Pitt are all threats to win the EWL along with the Mountaineers, while Virginia Tech has shown some early strength as well depsite two league losses.

WVU will also face top twenty members Ohio State (on the road) and Nebraska (at home). OSU is undefeated at 10-0 on the season, while Nebraska is 7-3.
