Young Wrestlers Show Well At Edinboro

The future of the West Virginia wrestling squad was on display at the Edinboro Open this past weekend, and the young Mountaineers acquitted themselves well.

The Edinboro Open is limited to true freshmen and redshirts, and is designed to give thos wrestlers a taste of collegiate competition. Three West Virginia University wrestlers placed at Open over the weekend.

Seth Lisa, a freshman from Northampton, Pa., won the 133 bracket by defeating Edinboro's Glenn Sample 4-2 in the finals.

Matt Lebe, a freshman from Jeannette, Pa., finished second in the 157 bracket. Lebe won four matches before losing a 3-0 decision to Michigan's Pat Owen in the finals.

Mike Massenzio, a freshman from Montvale, N.J., lost in the second round to eventual champion Travis Frick, but won his next two matches to claim third at 184.

Other WVU wrestlers competing were freshman Nate Lingle 133 (3-2), freshman Eric Mullen (3-2) at 157 and freshman Sal Iodaci (1-2) at 184 for the Mountaineers.

Several of these wreslters, including Lebe and Massenzio, will compete for starting berths as early as next season.
