Catlett Retires; Effective Immediately

Gale Catlett missed the Big East coaches conference call this afternoon, and that absence was a harbinger of things to come.

Catlett's absence presaged his announcement of retirement from the men's basketball head coaching position at West Virginia University.

Although the official release from WVU said that Catlett would retire at the end of the season, the announcment also said that his nephew, Drew Catlett, would assume the bench coaching duties for the remainder of the season.

In retrospect, Catlett dropped a major hint of his decision at his postgame press conference following WVU's ugly loss to Virginia Tech on Wednesday evening. Saying he would "do things differently", Catlett made a brief statement, then noted that he was going to his office following his television show taping to figure out what was wrong with his team.

Evidently that office work included making the most difficult decision of retiring from what he always termed his "dream job" - coaching his alma mater.
