WVU in First Going Into Final Day of EWLs

Five West Virginia wrestlers are poised for championships after Day One of the Eastern Wrestling League tournament. The strong showing put WVU in first place going into Sunday's final rounds.

For the Mountaineers, Shane Cunanan at 141, Billy Smith at 149, Joe Carr at 157, Tom McMath at 165 and Greg Jones at 174 all won two matches on Saturday to move into the championship bout of their respective weight classes on Sunday.

Four other Mountaineer wrestlers remain alive in the wrestle backs, from which they could finish as high as third. Nathan Kendjorksy at 125, Ryan Wilman at 184 and Brett Miller at 197 all won first round consolation matches after dropping their opening bouts on Saturday, while Ryan Kehler lost a tough semifinal decision in the championship round.

All four of those wrestlers will be in action beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, with the championship rounds scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.

WVU leads Edinboro by 4.5 points going into the final day of the tournament. Both the Mountaineers and Fighting Scots have five wrestlers in championship bouts, with head to head battles between the two schools set at four different weight classes. Each school has only had one wrestler eliminated from the tournament so far, so it promises to be an exciting final day at Lock Haven to determine the title.
