Twice As Nice!

West Virginia's depth proved to be the key as the Mountaineers captured the Eastern Wrestling League Tournament by ten points over Edinboro on Sunday afternoon. The win provided the Mountianeers a sweep of the regual season dual and postseason tournament crowns.

In the tightly contested tournament, WVU recorded 114.5 points to edge the Fighting Scots, who finished with 104.5. This is the first time the Mountaineers have claimed the dual and the tournament titles in the same year and is only the second time WVU has won the tournament title.

WVU went 3-2 in weight class championship bouts, and also had two wrestlers bounce back after losses to win third place honors.

The champions for the Mountaineers were Nate Carr at 157, Tom McMath at 165 and Greg Jones at 174. Jones, only a freshman, was selected as the tournament's oustanding wreslter. Carr became only the sixth WVU wrestler to qualify for the NCAAs four times.

Shane Cunanan battled two time All-American Sean Gray of Virginia Tech to the wire before dropping a 7-5 decision in the championship bout, while Billy Smith (149) forfeited his match to JaMarr Bilman of Lock Haven.

WVU's two thirds came courtesy of Brent Miller at 197 and Ryan Kehler at heavyweight.

WVU will therefore place at least seven wrestlers in the NCAA tournament, as the top three spots from the EWL tournament earn automatic bids. Nine wildcard slots will be selected later today.
