First Day NCAA Wrestling Results

WVU sufferend a tough first day at the NCAA wrestling championships on Thursday.

The seven Mountaineers were a combined 8-6 on day one, but only one wrestler, Greg Jones at 174 pounds, remained in contention for a national title. Jones defeated Cal Poly's Steve Strange 17-10 and Oklahoma's Michael Barger 8-3 to advance to the quarterfinals in the championship bracket tomorrow.

Other than Jones, WVU managed only two other victories in the opening round of the championships.

The other six WVU wrestlers all remained alive in the tournament by winning at least one Thursday match, but everyone other than Jones is in the wrestlebacks, which begin tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.

Shane Cunanan got WVU off to a good start by decisioning Ralph Lopez of Fresno State 8-3 in the 141 pound weight class, but was pinned by Chad Erickson of Minnesota in the round of 16.

At 149, Billy Smith was pinned by top seed Mike Zadick of Iowa, but bounced back to defeat Brad Cieleski of Slippery Rock by an 8-2 count.

Joe Carr suffered a disappointing loss to unseeded Adam Britt of VMI by a 6-1 score, but managed to pin Boise State's Mitch Morgan in just :43 seconds in the first consolation round.

Unranked Mark Fee of Appalachian State further darkened the Mountaineers' day by upsetting Tom McMath by a 10-6 score in the opening round. McMath did rebound to defeat Scott Roth of Cornell 10-4.

At 197, Brent Miller provided a ray of light by defeating Tyrone Byrd of Illinois by a 6-2 count, but Miller was then pinned by Ohio State's Nick Preston in the round of 16.

Finally, heavyweight Ryan Kehler dropped a major decision by a 12-0 score to third seeded 3) Leonce Crump of Oklahoma, but returned to decision Michigan's Matt Brink by the score of 5-3.
