Baseball Splits Big East Opener

WVU went 1-1 in a doubleheader against one of the bottom teams of the Big East on Saturday.

The Mountaineers' Big East baseball season got off to an uneven start Saturday as they split a doubleheader with Georgetown on Saturday. The Hoyas were picked last in the conference in a preaseason poll, and were 8-19 entering the games.

WVU won the first game 4-0 on the strength of Billy Biggs' three hitter. Biggs struck out five and walked none in his complete game gem.

Dallas Crews provided all the support Biggs needed with a two run homer.

In the second game, WVU took an early 2-0 lead but gave up five runs in the fifth inning on the way to a 6-3 loss. WVU scored one run in the final inning, but left the bases loaded as their rally fell short.

WVU is now 9-8 overall and 1-1 in the Big East. They close out the series with a single game on Sunday against the Hoyas.
