Saturday Scrimmage Report - 4/13

Injuries, rain and some sloppy play dampened Saturday's scrimmage at Pony Lewis Field in Morgantown.

The offense ran several series from various positions on the field during the two hour controlled scrimmage session.

Series began at midfield, the offense's thirty and ten yard lines, and the defense's twenty five. The scrimmage concluded with several goal line situations.

The first four series were crisply played, with the offense moving the ball for two field goals, while the defense converted a pair of stops with a turnover and a fourth down stop. Spur Jermaine Thaxton intercepted a pass to stop one drive, and lost his shoe on the ensuing return.

The later phases of practice were marred with several penalties, including one personal foul call after a scuffle. A passing shower also contributed to several bad snap exhanges from center Tim Brown, who was filling in for Ben Timmons at center. Timmons sustained a knee injury early in the scrimmage, but did manage to walk off the field.

Others banged up on the day included defensive end Tim Love, who sprained a knee, Jermaine Thaxton, who was hit on the head, Jason Davis, who had a pinched nerve, and Lance Frazier, who added a deep thigh bruise to a turf toe injury he aggravated on Friday. Timmons and Love did not return to action.

Other big plays on the day included two touchdown catches for Miquelle Henderson, an Anthony Mims interception return for a touchdown, and a fifty yard catch and run by walkon wide receiver Josh Romeo. Romeo was caught from behind by Thaxton.

Avon Cobourne continued to demonstrate why he's an all-America candidate. Cobourne made several strong moves, ran through tackle attempts and was clearly the dominant player on the field.

The defensive line batted down no fewer than four passes on the day, including batdowns by Tim Love and Ed Velickoff. They did an excellent job of getting their hands up and getting into passing lanes. WVU defensive backs and linebackers also broke up several passes, inclduing two well timed efforts by Ben Collins and Lance Frazier.

Hikee Johnson got more time at superback, and ran hard between the tackles on several carries. Johnson's move paved the way for Moe Fofana and Adam King to get the majority of time at the fullback positions, which will have a bit more invovlement in the offense. Several I formations, as well as a screen to the fullback, have bene in evidence.

Todd James hit all four of his field goal attempts out of the hold of A.J. Nastasi. Of course, those kicks were all made on high school goalposts, which are wider than those in college.

Walkon Matt McCullough hit the other field goal attempt.

The defense showed some muscle during the goal line series, recovering two fumbles and making several fourth down stops. Linebacker Mo Howard and safety Jahmile Addae both had big hits during the goal line portion of the scrimmage.
