4/17 Practice Report

Numbers continued to dwindle for the Mountianeer football team on Wednesday, as only seven offensive linemen were available for duty.

As a result of the ever decreasing numbers, little contact work was done even though the team was in full pads for the final practice session before Saturday's spring game.

A thunderstorm moved through Morgantown during the afternoon, leaving a hot and muggy field for the Mountaineers to conduct their workout.

Running with the first unit on the offensive line were Lance Nimmo at left tackle, Jeff Berk at left guard, Ken Sandor at center, Geoff Lewis at right guard and Travis Garrett at right tackle.

That quintet was joined by Garin Justice and Matt Ameri as the only two available backups.

Tim Brown became the fourth Mountaineer center to miss practice time this spring, as he was clad in a red jersey for the day.

With the depletion along the offensive line, the return of Rod Olds to that side of the football would seem to be a a natural, but Olds remained with the defensive linemen. Like Cassel Smith at running back last year, many observers believe that Olds would be positioned to see more palying time at another position.

Speaking of Smith, he has apparently taken care of the academic issues he was facing, as he practiced on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Smith's return bolsters the wide receiver corps, and if he can continue to improve at the pace he has show so far, he could be a factor among the pass catchers this fall.
