DL, 6-5, 260 lbs., 4.9
John S. Shaw High, Mobile, Ala.
All-state defender for head coach Mardye McDole … recorded 74 tackles, eight sacks, six tackles for loss and seven fumble recoveries last season in a pressure four-man front
"We tried to control the gaps and make sacks," McDole said. "Andrae brought pressure from the end, doing a lot of rushing and playing the pass well. He is quick for his size, and he will get better. He has speed and his lower body is very strong. He has not reached his potential."
Will need to improve upper body strength, according to McDole … Mobile Register all-regional … attended the Nike Camp this summer
"He got away from home and was overwhelmed with what he saw," said McDole of Wright's visit to West Virginia. "A few others recruited him because of his size, but WVU made the best effort."
Wright will be the first player from John Shaw High to play at West Virginia … Shaw High had four other players sign football scholarships this year, though at lower level, as they'll be attending West Alabama, Alabama A&M and Albany State as well as West Virginia … Wright also got recruiting interest from Duke, LSU, Mississippi State and Tulane
"It feels kind of good for me, going to a new environment, meeting new people and seeing new things," said Wright of going so far from home. "I think it'll be good. I think I can become better as a person and a player."
Wright won't be completely alone, as WVU signed four players this year from the Mobile area, including Warren Young, Joe Hunter and Ben Clemmons … seven players from southwest Alabama signed Division I-A scholarships this year, and four of them are WVU bound
The Mountaineers, behind the recruiting of assistant coach Rick Trickett, who graduated from high school in Mobile, also got current freshmen receivers Dee Alston and Miquelle Henderson from the Mobile area last year
Wright also is a basketball and track letterman … threw shot put and tried baseball as well … has not yet qualified academically ... will major in business ... son of Pattie Landelson and Alarick Wright.
What Rich Rodriguez says: "Andrae Wright is a big, tall guy who we think will grow even more. Right now he's 255, 260, but we think he'll be 285, 290 before his career is over. He runs very well. He has the necessary GPA but needs a few points on the test, and we think he'll get it."
What Herb Hand says: "Andrae Wright and Warren Young are bookend types. Both have similar builds. Andrae is a little bigger right now from a weight standpoint. He's a big athlete who can move. Anytime you get someone with that ability and size and speed who can use their hands real well, you better take them."
