Newcomer Profile - Dwayne Thompson

A look at Florida quarterback Dwayne Thompson.

Dwayne Thompson
Quarterback, 6-2, 180 lbs., 4.5
Killian High, Miami, Fla.

Athletic quarterback who earned the captain's award for Coach Billy Rolle at Miami Killian High ... earned third-team all-Dade County honors in 2001.

Passed for 1,625 yards and 10 TDs with six interceptions … also rushed for six scores ... an athletic player who would seem to have the combination of running and passing ability to fit Rodriguez's spread offense well … if he doesn't work out at QB, though, he almost certainly could play either wide receiver or defensive back.

MVP of the Dade-Broward all-star game ... also runs track ... played in one of the most competitive football areas of the country. There are currently 50 players in the NFL who are natives of Miami, while the whole state of West Virginia has just five natives playing in the league.

Former Mountaineer linebacker Frank Browning (the cousin of another ex-WVU player, John Browning) was a Killian graduate … another former Mountaineer player, Clayton Ellwanger (who is now an assistant football coach at Morgantown High), is a Killian grad

Thompson will enroll in general studies ... son of LaVerne Carter and Dwayne Jeffrey.

What Rich Rodriguez says: "Dwayne Thompson is another of those so-called sleepers. He's an outstanding athlete who could also play safety, but we're going to look at him as a quarterback."

What Herb Hand says: "Dwayne Thomas is a left-handed kid who is very athletic and who can throw the hell out of the ball. He can run and throw and has good size. He's very similar in build to Rasheed Marshall. He brings a lot of the same things to the table in terms of athletic ability."
