ABCD Camp Opens

Over the next few weeks, camp and tournament action around the country will be hot and heavy. This week the ABCD Camp in Teaneck, New Jersey got underway.

The Adidas ABCD Basketball Camp, which has a few players on WVU's recruiting list, started off with a relatively slow first day. Most of the day was marked by too much showboating, sloppy play, missed shots and errant passes.

The majority of the campers I interviewed eventually started talking about the recent NBA draft where 2000 underclassman MVP, Lenny Cooke went undrafted. That fact, along with the large influx of foreign players into the draft, certainly caught the attention of some propsects who may have been entertaining thoughts of declaring after the upcoming high school season.

Camp Notes:

Former WVU assistant coach Lanny Van Eman is coaching once again at the camp. This year Van Eman is coaching the Heat squad. One of the Heat's top players, 6-2 guard Jamon Gordon from Jacksonville, Florida, is a WVU recruiting target.

This year ABCD Camp has 240 campers from all over the world. The camper coming the longest distance is Yi Jianlian, 6-11 220 C/F from Shen Zeun, China. The shortest camper this year is 5-7 Matthew Fournier from Rolling Hills, CA. The camp boasts 4 seven-footers.

On the recruiting front, rumors continue to circulate at ABCD Camp that Rutgers is on the verge of signing 5 Top 60 players. Included among that group is Darryl Watkins 6-11 240 (NJ), Will Sheridan 6-8 240 (DE) and Marquis Webb 6-3 180 (NJ). If true, it would be a monster class for Gary Waters and the Scarlet Knights.

BlueGoldNews.com will have more in the next few days from the ABCD Camp.
