Verbal commitment - Mike Villagrana talked with Boardman High School coach Garry Smith about two way player Mike Villagrana, who has given West Virginia a verbal commitment.

"He's just a big, very physical player," Smith said of Villagrana, who plays both ways for Smith's Spartan squad. "He really improved last year at tight end for us."

At 6-4 and 230 pounds, Smith has the frame to project to several different positions in college. He could be a tight end or defensive end, where he figures to move after playing some linebacker at Boardman. His coach believes that he will be looked at on both sides of the ball.

"He was more dominating on the defensive side of the ball for us last year, but he also had 25 catches on offense. He has really good capabilities on both sides of the ball. He'll be in there just about every snap for us. A lot of what he does on offense will depend on our quarterback, but he's a returnee also."

Villagrana started both his sophomore and junior seasons for Boardman High School, which is located near Youngstown. He attended the Nike camp at Penn State in April, and considered Iowa, Maryland, Michigan and Pitt.
