Battle In The Trenches

One of the basic truths of football games is that they are often won and lost in the trenches. West Virginia and Pitt are extending that battle to the recruiting fields this year, as both schools are hauling in an impressive crop of offensive linemen -- many after battling head-to-head for their services.

While Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt's lament at halftime of his team's 45-13 shellacking at the hands of the Mountaineers last November holds true (Wannstedt said simply "We have to run faster"), he also knew that the West Virginia offensive line was dominating his defensive front. Therefore, along with the search for speed, Wannstedt has concentrated on offensive linemen in this year's class.

That has set up a battle royal with WVU, which is also replenishing its troops up front, and expects to sign at least five offensive linemen in this year's class. The action has been fast and furious so far, with each school claiming victories in head-to-head recruiting tussles.
