Newcomer Profile - Kevin McLee

A look at Pennsylvania linebacker Kevin McLee

Kevin McLee
Fullback/Linebacker, 6-2, 230 lbs., 4.6
Uniontown High, Uniontown, Pa.

Hard-nosed football player who can play both fullback and linebacker for the Mountaineers … will be placed at fullback to start his career … goes by the nickname "Boo" …

"The first thing we noticed was that he played so hard," Mountaineer head coach Rich Rodriguez said. "Some guys play with a great motor on one side of the ball, but he plays with a great motor on both sides of the ball. We would have signed him as a linebacker, and he may wind up playing linebacker. But we think "Boo" McLee can be that big fullback for us."

Starred at Uniontown High for head coach John Fortugna … rushed for 1,637 yards in his senior season on 247 carries, a 6.6 yards per carry average … scored 23 touchdowns, which were the second most in Western Pennsylvania this season … rushed for over 3,000 yards in his three-years as a starter at Uniontown High … led the Red Raiders to their best season in over two decades, finishing the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record.

Uniontown, which won the Keystone Conference title this season, was upset in the first round of the Class 3A WPIAL playoffs, losing to 16th-seeded Highlands High School … named second-team all-state for all Pennsylvania divisions by the Associated Press … named second-team all-state on the defensive side of the ball for the Big Schools, which includes only the 3A and 4A divisions for the state.

Listed as one of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Fabulous 22 players … first-team all-conference and all-county … chose WVU over interested schools such as Pitt, Michigan State and Southern Cal … follows his uncles, Reggie and William McLee, both of who played at WVU in the ‘70s.

Reggie, who is now an assistant coach at Uniontown High and has a son who is an excellent player as a sophomore for the Red Raiders, lettered as a linebacker for the Mountaineers in 1979, while William was a running back who lettered in 1977 … Kevin's father, Kevin, Sr., was a starting tailback at Georgia in the ‘70s

"He runs really well," said Fortugna. "He can catch the ball, and he's light on his feet. I think the fact that he was around a lot of college athletes in his family has helped him establish high goals."

Uniontown teammate Carl Farrell also committed to WVU last fall but because of academic shortcomings, the Red Raider quarterback/defensive back will attend a junior college before he can play at a Division I-A school.

McLee will major in sports management … also plays baseball and runs track for Uniontown High … son of Elaine Murray and Kevin McLee.

What Rich Rodriguez says: "We're looking at Kevin as a fullback, but he could also be a linebacker. He's a very good football player, and some of you may remember his uncle, Reggie, who played here in the ‘70s."

What Herb Hand says: "We consider Kevin McLee a local kid. How far is Uniontown? Fifteen or 20 minutes away? He's hardnosed, just you're typical Western Pa. football player. He's not only tough, but he's also big and strong and fast. He's a real talent."
