Football Team Wraps Up First Full Day

The Mountaineer football team concentrated on passing drills during Thrusday afternoon's practice session.

Pasisng was the order of the afternoon, with drills ranging from one on one to full team pass filling a good bit of the session on the grass practice field. The defense recorded three interceptions during the sessions.

The wide receivers and defensive backs got a number of opportunities to show their abilities during the drills, with juco transfer Derrick Smith standing out with a couple of tough catches.

Newcomer Travis Garvin showed the effects of his lengthy layoff from the football field, as his stamina was not quite where he figures to have it by the end of fall two a days. As Coach Rodriguez noted earlier in the week, it's much more difficult for a player to get or remain in shape when working out by himself, which is what Garvin was forced to do for some of the summer. However, Garvin has plenty of time to round into form by the time the season opens.

The only player not participating in full drills was running back Erick Phillips, who had on a green jersey as he battles the leg problem he's had since at least the Big 33 game. The problem does not appear to be serious.

Practice continues on Friday with another morning/afternoon doubleheader.
