Marmolejo Keys Win; Wins Award

West Virginia University has named junior Pablo Marmolejo its athlete of the week after helping the 20th-ranked men's swimming team to its first victory over Pitt in the last 17 years.

Marmolejo pulled through for the Mountaineers when they were dire need of points against the Panthers, winning the 200 IM (1:51.64) in the final individual event of the meet to break a tie and give WVU the meet win. The Mountaineers, now 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Big East conference, defeated the Panthers 159-141.

The Mexico City, Mexico, native also won the 200 fly (1:51.46) and the 100 fly (49.21), and was a member of the winning 400 free relay team. The international talent is coming off of a strong winter break and looks to make a splash at this year's Big East Championship.

Coach Sergio Lopez was pleased with Marmolejo's performance Saturday and believes that his impressive work ethic and desire to succeed pushed him to the key victory against Pitt.

The men's squad is currently ranked 20th in Swimming World Magazine's Dual Meet Top 25 Poll.
