Assembling The Pieces

Multiple sources have confirmed that West Virginia has snared a second coach from the University of South Florida. blogger Brett McMurphy has reported that West Virginia has hired onetime WVU graduate assistant Rod Smith as quarterbacks coach. Smith was briefly a member of Rich Rodriguez' original staff before accepting the quarterback coaching position at USF. He moved up to offensive coordinator two seasons ago.

Other sources close to the USF program have confirmed the hire, and say that a formal announcement could come as soon as Tuesday.

USF itself confirmed at least part of the move as well, announcing that current assistant Greg Gregory would replace Smith, who "resigned his position" according to a South Florida prepared statement. Smith's biography, along with that of Greg Frey, who earlier Monday accepted the position of offensive line coach at WVU, have already been removed from the school's web site.

Smith was a quarterback at Glenville State under Rodriguez, and was also a graduate assistant at Clemson while Rodriguez was an assistant coach there.
