Whitlock's No-No Earns WVU Award

Redshirt sophomore baseball player Josh Whitlock has been named West Virginia University's athlete of the week after tossing the eighth no-hitter in school history last week against Coppin State.

The Given, W.Va., native struck out eight of the 24 batters he faced and walked just three in seven innings as he blanked Coppin State on April 3. Junior Matt Yurish was the last Mountaineer to pitch a no-hitter, which also came against Coppin State. Yurish's gem came on April 4 a year ago.

Whitlock improved to 3-3 on the year. He has five starts under his belt this year.

In 25.2 innings on the mound, he as struck out 28 batters and allowed only 20 hits. He is one of only five WVU pitchers to boast an ERA below 4.00 (3.86).

West Virginia retruns to action today with a doubleheader against Maryland-Eastern Shore, then hosts Cincinnati over the weekend in Big East action. The Mountaineers are 4-5 in the Big East and 18-10 overall.
