New Carpet Selected

West Virginia has selected the surface that will replace the current AstroPlay in Milan Puskar Stadium.

Ballard Sports of Cary, N.C. will conduct the replacement project, and install the FieldTurf DuraSpine Monofilament Turf System. The most advanced system offered by FieldTurf, the DuraSpine system features individual monofilament fibers that are designed to resist matting, FieldTurf has an in-fill mixture of sand, ground tires, and sneaker soles. This patented combination of smooth, rounded silica sand, rubber granules, and NIKE GRIND, made of re-ground athletic shoe material, provides stability, padding and drainage, much like dirt does around real grass.

The amount of the contract let is $901,152. Work is expected to begin in the next few days. Preparation work for additional seating adjacent to the Touchdown Terrace in the North end zone has already begun.

The current AstroPlay sufrace, installed in 2002,has been beset with problems during its five-year span. The lines in the field had to be replaced whn the originally installed markers came loose, and shedding of fibers has been an ongoing concern.

Syracuse, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville and Pittsburgh are other Big East schools which have Field Turf in their football stadiums.

The turf installation must be completed by the start of the Rich Rodriguez football camps in mid-June.
