Game of Inches - and Maintenance

WVU may owe Saturday's win over Cincinnati, at least in part, to the vigilant maintenance staff on the Bearcat campus.

Cincinnati kicker Jonathan Ruffin's last second field goal attempt bounced off the left upright late Saturday evening to preserve WVU's 35-32 win, but the key play may have occurred earlier in the week.

According to at least one UC sideline worker, Cincinnati personnel noticed last week that the left upright on the goal posts at the open end of the stadium was bent outwards. The post was reportedly straightened in time for this week's game with WVU.

Had the repair not taken place, Ruffin's kick might well have either bounced through or gone through cleanly and put the game into overtime. And with the momentum provided by such a comeback, UC would surely have been on the upswing going into the extra periods.
