White Drafted

There shouldn't be any panic on the part of Mountaineer fans after West Virginia quarterback Patrick White was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the Major League Baseball Draft.

In a short statement released by West Virginia University, White said, "I appreciate the Angels thinking that highly of me. But right now I'm concentrating on playing football at West Virginia University."

White was also pusued and targeted by the Angels coming out of high school. A fleet outfield prospect who hit, ran the bases and covered ground with major league ability, White considered an offer from the Angels before deciding to pursue his college football dream. He chose West Virginia after originally committing to LSU.

The selection of White in the 27th round (pick #838) is probably more an issue of covering the bases by the Angels as it is an expectation that he would leave college at this point. Should White decide to leave West Virginia after his junior year and not have the NFL pan out, his rights would be owned by the Angels. Such a series of events, however, would be highly unlikely.
