Mountaineers, Irish, Battle It Out

As the West Virginia and Notre Dame women's soccer teams battle it out for supremacy of the Mid-Atlantic Division of the Big East conference, individual players from both squads are doing likewise for weekly honors.

The Mountaineers and Irish don't play each other until October 6, but they are already squaring off at the top of the Big East conference.

Both schools sport identical 2-0 conference marks that place them atop the Mid-Atlantic Division. WVU has but one loss on its overall record, while the Irish have two. (For some reason, the conference still lists Notre Dame as the first place team -- alphabetical order, perhaps?)

Both schools also shared the Big East player of the week award, as WVU's Laura Kane and Notre Dame's Amy Warner took home league co-offensive player of the week honors.

Kane scored three goals, including the game-winner and only goal of the match against previously unbeaten Villanova on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Kane was previously honored by the BIG EAST for her play during the week of Sept. 2. She was also a member of Soccer Buzz's elite team of the week and Soccer America's team of the week for the same week.
