This Week in Volleyball

The West Virginia University volleyball team will travel to Buffalo, N.Y., this weekend to compete in the Western New York Invitational ... the Mountaineers will face Albany, Buffalo and Canisius throughout the weekend ... games will begin on Saturday, Sept. 1, when the Mountaineers face Albany at 10 a.m.

Last Week in Volleyball

The Mountaineers are off to a 2-1 start in 2007 after the completion of the Morehead State Comfort Inn and Suites Invitational this past weekend … on Friday afternoon, the Mountaineers fell to Southern Illinois 3-2, but defeated tournament host Morehead State later on in the evening in a 3-2 match … on Saturday, the Mountaineers swept Towson 3-0.

Junior middle blocker Lisa Hough proved to be what the Mountaineers need this past weekend, as she put up consistent numbers … showing leadership on and off the court she ending the weekend with 24 kills and four service aces … freshman libero Bonnie West made her debut this past weekend leading the team in digs with a strong 43. "I thought we played very well as a team and as a group which is important. The experience of playing tough teams in the beginning of our season and defeating them is very exciting." - head coach Veronica Hammersmith.

This Week in Women's Soccer

West Virginia will play its season opener Friday against Bowling Green at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium ... DDSS, also the site of the 2007 BIG EAST Championships, will play host to 10 women's soccer home matches this fall.

Last Week in Women's Soccer

WVU won two home preseason scrimmages ... first, WVU defeated Kentucky, 1-0, in an exhibition outing on Aug. 18, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … the Mountaineers worked to a scoreless first half, out-shooting the Wildcats 5-2 in the opening 45 minutes of play … West Virginia ended the tie with a goal from Ashley Banks at 84:51 … the senior forward took a through ball from Kiley Harris and beat UK goalkeeper Laura Baker for the game's only score ... on Aug. 25, WVU handled James Madison and rolled to a 4-2 win in Morgantown ... Amanda Cicchini scored 15 minutes in to put WVU up 1-0 ... Ashley Banks and Deana Everrett tacked on two more first half goals as WVU led 3-0 at the break ... after the Dukes scored off a corner kick early in the second half, Kim Bonilla added WVU's fourth goal.

This year's version of Mountaineer soccer returns 13 letterwinners from the 2006 squad that went 14-4-3 overall, 8-2-1 in BIG EAST play … nine of the 11 starters also return, giving West Virginia some veteran players with postseason experience … West Virginia looks to extend its postseason run with an eighth straight NCAA tournament appearance in 2007 … WVU added two new coaches this spring in a pair of former Mountaineer soccer players: Nikki Goodenow and Lisa Stoia.

"We do have some experienced players back, which is always nice. They worked extremely hard in the spring to better themselves individually, and as a team. They will be counted on a great deal to help win games this fall." – head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown.

This Week in Men's Soccer

The West Virginia men's soccer team will open up its regular season on Friday, Aug. 31, when they travel Columbus, Ohio, to face Ohio State in the Bert and Iris Wolstein Soccer Classic ... game time is set for 5 p.m. ... WVU will then face Penn State on Sept. 2 at noon.

Last Week in Men's Soccer

WVU defeated Marshall 3-0 on Aug. 22 in the squads first of two exhibition matches … senior Andy Wright had two goals while senior Mike Anoia added one to make the final margin … on Aug. 25, the Mountaineers hosted Kentucky in their second and last exhibition match … the game was suspended early in the second half due to lightning in the area … WVU was up 1-0 after a goal by senior captain Dan Stratford … the team will play three straight road games before hosting Duquesne on Sept. 10.

This Week in Cross Country

The WVU cross country team will host the West Virginia Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 1, at the WVU agricultural farm ... the meet is the season opener for the Mountaineers ... last season WVU had the top six finishers at the meet. The team was idle last week.

Eight letterwinners return from a 2006 squad that finished sixth in the BIG EAST and fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region ... Clara Grandt, Keri Bland and Marie Louise Asselin each led WVU in three races last season ... after finishing 12th and 19th at the Mid-Atlantic regional championship, Asselin and Bland were named to the all-Mid-Atlantic regional team.

"Sitting here today, if I had to make a prediction, I can say that we would be very disappointed if we aren't at the NCAA Championship at the end of the season. This is a young team, but they've already mastered big meets. They understand me and they understand each other quicker than any other team I've ever coached before. They aren't afraid of a challenge, and I like that." - head coach Sean Cleary.
