Andy Wright has been named West Virginia's athlete of the week for his soccer play in the Bert and Iris Wolstein Soccer Classic last weekend in Columbus, Ohio.

The native of Liverpool, England, scored the lone goal in the 41st minute of the 1-0 victory over Penn State on Sunday. Wright's goal came courtesy of Dan Stratford, who found Wright for the header off a free kick from 20 yards out. Wright, a Soccer America preseason All-America selection, was named to the all-tournament team along with teammate Stratford.

  • This Week in Men's Soccer: The West Virginia men's soccer team will travel to Maryland to take on the Terrapins in College Park for a 7 p.m. kick off on Sept. 9 … the game will be taped by CSTV and will air on tape-delay on at 8 p.m.

  • Last Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers won the WVU Invitational held at the WVU Agronomy Farm ... WVU had five of the top eight spots for 19 points and was followed by West Virginia Wesleyan, which had 59 points ... WVU freshmen Kaylyn Christopher and Kate Harrison took first and second place, respectively, both with a time of 15:29 ... junior Alison Spiker crossed the finish line third in 15:57 ... other top WVU finishers included Karly Hamric in fifth (16:12), Nicole Lemal in eighth (16:38), Nicole Dorinzi in ninth (16:40) and Kerry Davis in 11th (16:54).

  • Last Week in Women's Soccer: West Virginia got the 2007 season off to an ideal start, shutting out Bowling Green 4-0 Saturday evening in front of 736 fans at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium ... the game marked the season opener for both teams … junior forward Deana Everrett led the way with two goals to go along with one assist … on Sunday, ninth-ranked Virginia scored three goals in a 10-minute span for a 3-0 win in Charlottesville, Va. … all three goals came in the second half … WVU was out-shot 16-7 on the afternoon.

  • This Week in Volleyball: The West Virginia University volleyball team will host the annual WVU Classic September 7-8 … the two day tournament will feature Indiana State, Butler and East Tennessee State … the Mountaineers will face Indiana State in their first match of the tournament on Friday, Sept. 7, at 7:30 p.m.

  • Last Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers improved their record to 5-1 this past weekend as they went undefeated at the Western New York Invitational, in Buffalo, N.Y. … in game one the Mountaineers defeated Albany 3-1 (29-30, 30-19, 30-24, 30-28) in a hard fought match … later in the day the Mountaineers went on to sweep Buffalo 3-0 (30-24, 30-21, 31-18) … in the last and final day the Mountaineers went on to slip by Canisius 3-2 (30-28, 27-30, 30-23, 25-30, 15-9) for their third win this past weekend … this weekends success puts the Mountaineers season record thus far two wins better than last year's overall record.

  • Notes & Quotes: Junior middle blocker Tammy Wolf was nominated to the all-tournament team for her efforts at the Western New York Invitational … Wolf recorded 43 kills on the weekend and eight blocks ... senior outside hitter Abby Tevis recorded two double-doubles throughout the weekend … tevis's first double-double came in the first match of the weekend against Albany when she recorded 13 kills and 16 digs … then in the match against Canisius Tevis captured 26 kills and 16 digs for her second double-double of the weekend ... freshman libero Bonnie West led the team this weekend in digs with 49 giving her 92 on the season.
