Backing It Up

The comments on the BlueGoldNews.com message boards about Owen Schmitt's strength and prowess are exaggerations, but after his performance against Marshall, the gap between those sometimes comic takes and reality might be shrinking.

Schmitt, who lined up at tight end, fullback and slotback during an ironman performance in Saturday's 48-23 win over Marshall, was termed as one of the team's best-conditioned athletes by head coach Rich Rodriguez. Schmitt likley blessed all those hot summer workouts that gave him such stamina, as he stayed on the field for most of WVU's second half snaps, as well as special teams duty, as the Mountaineers rallied to rout the Herd.

Schmitt, true to his nature, downplayed his effort in the 95+ degree heat, noting that his first half play was substandard. He did allow that his conditioning, as well as that of his teammates, played a role in WVU's win.

In this postgame interview, Schmitt discusses his play during the second half, and WVU's changed tactics during the final 30 minutes.
