Defensive Matters

West Virginia defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel was pleased with his defense, especially its effort, after West Virginia's 38-31 win over Louisville on Thursday night.

Despite yielding 345 passing yards to the Cardinals, West Virginia's defense actually played well against one of the most high-powered passing attacks in the country. The Mountaineers didn't give up scads of big plays as it did a year ago in Louisville, and it made several of its own. The Mountaineer defense created four turnovers, scored once and set up another to more than play its part in the Big East conference win.

Almost unnoticed in the game was West Virginia's total shutdown of the Louisville running game. WVU allowed just 37 yards to the Cardinals, with the long being an 11-yard scramble by quarterback Brian Brohm. The longest run by a U of L back was a meager seven yards. The domination in that phase of the game was a key for West Virginia.

Casteel addressed that important factor and more in his postgame comments.
