This Week in Women's Soccer
West Virginia owns a record of 15-4-2 and is seeded fourth in the NCAA tournament field. WVU hosts Navy at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. If West Virginia wins, it will face the winner of James Madison and Penn on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m.

American Division top seed West Virginia won a penalty kick shootout against National Division top seed Notre Dame to claim its first-ever Big East soccer title Sunday afternoon in front of a record-setting crowd at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … the Mountaineers out-shot the nine-time Big East champion Irish 5-3 in penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 stalemate through two overtimes … freshman Kerri Butler was brilliant in goal for the Mountaineers, making the biggest save of her young career on the first penalty kick of the shootout … Butler made a diving stop against Herman Trophy winner Kerri Hanks bringing the crowd of 1,213 to its feet .. her performance earend her a spot on SoccerAmerica's team of the week … West Virginia then connected on five straight penalty kicks, including a successful try from freshman Sydney Metheny … with WVU's penalty kick score at 4-3, junior Lisa DuCote connected on the game-winning kick to seal the Big East title … all five Mountaineers made their penalty kicks in the shootout … Notre Dame took an early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute on a goal from Hanks … WVU's tying goal was set up when junior midfielder Michelle Molinari was fouled behind … the Mountaineers capitalized on the free kick in the 39th minute on a goal from senior Kiley Harris, her fourth of the season … senior forward Kim Bonilla sent a free kick to the far side where sophomore midfielder Carolyn Blank headed the ball back into the middle for Harris' diving header from four-yards out … WVU's defense was stout against UND's offense all afternoon ... WVU is ranked No. 15 in the nation by Soccer America and tenth in the Soccer Buzz rankings, giving the Mountaineers their 75th consecutive week ranked in the poll, the sixth-longest current streak among ranked teams.

Last Week in Cross Country No. 14 WVU took second at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Saturday, Nov. 10, in Bethlehem, Pa. ... the Mountaineers had 77 points behind Princeton, who had 56 points ... Georgetown was third with 79 points, Penn State was fourth with 93 points and Villanova was fifth with 115 points ... the Mountaineers had three runners in the top 10 ... WVU sophomore Marie-Louise Asselin was the highest Mountaineer finisher in third at 20:00, while Clara Grandt was sixth at 20:20 and Keri Bland was just behind her in seventh at 20:21 ... freshman Kaylyn Christopher was fourth Mountaineer to finish in 21:17 for 30th, while Maria Dalzot was 31st at 21:19 to round out the top five scoring runners ... The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams will take the next two weeks off as they prepare for the Georgia Invitational … the three day meet is set to begin on Friday, Nov. 30. Last Week in Swimming & Diving The Mountaineers fell to Big East rivals Louisville on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the WVU Natatorium … the Cardinal men defeated the Mountaineers 176-126, while the women won 168-132.

Senior Nick Delic and sophomore Zoltan Povazsay led the men's side with three wins a piece … Delic took first in the 50 and 100 free events with times of 21.06 and 45.62, while also taking first in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 41.48 ... The Mountaineers went 1-0-1 in the first round and quarterfinals of the BIG EAST tournament this past week … WVU defeated Villanova 2-0 at home on Wednesday, Nov. 7, before tying Louisville on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2-2 … senior Dan Stratford scored a goal in each of the matches while senior Pat Carroll netted his first goal of his career against Louisville … after double overtime against Louisville in the BIG EAST quarterfinals, the match went into penalty kicks for the first time this season … Louisville advanced by a count of 3-1.

The West Virginia University rifle team fell to Kentucky, 4616-4647, in its final match of the fall season on Saturday, Nov. 10 … freshman Brandi Eskew had a breakout match, totaling 1167 points … Kentucky and WVU tied in smallbore with a score of 2300, before the Wildcats took the air rifle event 2347-2316 … Eskew shot a 584 in smallbore before shooting a 583 in air rifle … the Petersburg, W. Va. native led the Mountaineers in both events and topped the entire field in smallbore.
