Responding To The Call

He admits that he's the target of pointed barbs from head coach Bob Huggins concerning certain aspects of his play. However, senior leader Jamie Smalligan doesn't take them personally, and uses the coaching points he receives to improve his play, as he demonstrated in WVU's 81-53 win over Arkansas-Monticello.

West Virginia's senior center, who has had his rebouding skills compared to those of a dead man, could have pouted, reacted negatively or shrunk away from the prodding of his coaching staff concerning his board work. Instead, Smalligan showed his character -- and it's all good -- in taking the criticism in stride.

Against the Boll Weevils, Smalligan set the tone with three boards in the first four minutes of the game, and contined his aggressive play throughout the contest, finishing with 12 points and six boards in 23 minutes of action. In this post-game interview, Smalligan discussess WVU's continued emphasis on rebounding, his adaptation to the new coaching staff, and the way in which he responds to the demands of the caoching staff.
