UConn, Seton Hall Are Streaking
Connecticut and Seton Hall have been the hottest BIG EAST teams of late. The Huskies have won four in a row, which includes wins over Marquette, Cincinnati, Indiana and Louisville. The Cincinnati and Indiana victories came on the road. UConn sits at 15-5 overall and 5-3 in the BIG EAST. Guard A.J. Price has been the catalyst, averaging 14.3 points and a league-leading 6.1 assists per game. Seton Hall's winning streak reached five games after Wednesday's 84-71 overtime victory at Rutgers. Pirate forward Brian Laing leads the BIG EAST in scoring with a 19.3 average. The Hall is 15-6 overall and 5-3 in the league.
All 16 Teams Battle Saturday
Saturday, for the first time since the BIG EAST expanded to 16 teams, every team will be involved in a league game on the same day. Television, of course, has every game covered. Three games will tip off at noon, Eastern time. Syracuse plays at Villanova on ESPN. The BIG EAST Game of the Week will feature either Seton Hall at Georgetown or Marquette at Cincinnati. At 1 p.m., CBS Sports will telecast Pittsburgh at Connecticut. Rutgers plays at Louisville at 3 p.m. DePaul visits Notre Dame at 6 p.m. on ESPN Classic. At 7 p.m., West Virginia travels to Providence and St. John's visits USF. The Rutgers-Louisville, WVU-Providence and St. John's-USF games will televised to local markets and be available on the ESPN Full Court package.
BIG EAST Players Make Naismith, Wooden Midseason Lists
The BIG EAST is well represented on the midseason lists for the Naismith and Wooden Awards Both lists include 30 players. The Naismith and Wooden Awards are among the most prestigious national Player of the Year awards. Georgetown center Roy Hibbert, Notre Dame forward Luke Harangody and Pittsburgh forward Sam Young made both lists. Villanova guard Scottie Reynolds made the Wooden list.
BIG EAST Coaches Will Have Their Sneakers On For Cancer Fight
On Saturday, BIG EAST coaches will be wearing sneakers at their games to show their support in the fight against cancer. By wearing sneakers with their suits, coaches are drawing attention to the fact that cancer continues to be a major health concern and the public can help reduce the risk of cancer with exercise and a healthy diet. The National Association of Basketball Coaches is sponsoring the national effort. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim is the President of the NABC.
