Wrestling Hosts Lock Haven

The West Virginia wrestling team enters their third match of a four-match homestand as they take on Eastern Wrestling League foe Lock Haven on Sunday, February 3, at 1 p.m. at the Coliseum.

The Mountaineers (5-3, 2-0) are coming off a solid win over Bloomsburg, and look to extend their winning streak to a season-high three matches. WVU also defeated Clarion in their EWL opener, 35-3, to go 2-0 last week. Senior Jared Villers (197) sports a 12-2 overall record and remains undefeated in league play at 8-0. Villers also earned his first technical fall of the season last week after defeating Eric Shaw of Bloomsburg, 16-0, and leads the Mountaineers with 24 near fall points.

EWL wrestler of the week Zac Fryling (157), ranked No.18 in the latest USA Today/InterMat/NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll, went 2-0 last week and will look to build off his most impressive win of the season after defeating No. 19 ranked Matt Moley of Bloomsburg in overtime, 3-1. The Mountaineers are anchored by Chance Litton (174), Kurt Brenner (184), Villers and No. 17 ranked Dustin Rogers (HWT). All four grapplers have produced a combined 37-11 record and have provided important wins throughout the season.

The Bald Eagles (7-5, 1-2) are coming off a 28-13 victory over Cleveland State and are led by 149-pounder Matt Fittery, who has a team-leading 16 wins on the season. He will be going against two-time NCAA qualifier David Jauregui in what should be one of the key matchups of the contest. Last season, WVU defeated Lock Haven, 25-11, at the Thomas Fieldhouse in Lock Haven, Pa. The Mountaineers own the series record at 15-14, and have won eight of the last ten matches.
