WVU Baseball Bests Marshall

Josh Whitlock spread three hits over 8 1-3 innings to lead West Virginia to a 5-3 win over Marshall in day two of the Baseball at the Beach Tournament.

Whitlock (2-0) earned his second win of the season, facing 29 batters and holding Marshall (2-4) hitless for three-straight innings. He also finished with five strikeouts. The Mountaineer offense was led by junior Joe Agreste, who hit a key two RBI double in the sixth inning. He finished with two hits, one run and two RBIs, and freshman Jedd Gyorko had three hits and scored a run.

West Virginia (4-2) finished with five runs on 10 hits and committed one error, while Marshall scored three runs on five hits. The Herd's Dan Straily (0-1) was credited with the loss, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing five runs on seven hits. The first three innings were scoreless until the Thundering Herd got on the board. Nate Lape drove in Adam Yeager, giving Marshall a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The Mountaineer offense opened the game with a five-run sixth inning, taking a 5-1 lead. Vince Belnome singled to left field, driving in Dan Dibartolomeo to tie the game at 1-1. Designated hitter Chris Enourato was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Gyorko before Agreste followed with a two-RBI double, driving in Belnome and Austin Markel. Freshman Tobias Streich then hit a run-scoring single to drive in Agreste.

The Thundering Herd rallied in the ninth-inning when Lape picked up his third RBI of the game with a single to left field, cutting the deficit to 5-3. Yeager led Marshall with two hits and two runs scored and Lape finished with one hit and three RBIs. The Baseball at the Beach tournament will continue today in game three when the Mountaineers face tournament-host Coastal Carolina in a nightcap.
