In the Big East Preseason Coaches Poll, Louisville and Georgetown tied for first place. The coaches look clairvoyant because those two teams will play for the league's regular-season crown Saturday at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. CBS will televise at noon Eastern time. The Cardinals and Hoyas both bring 14-3 Big East records into the game. Louisville is riding a nine-game winning streak, while Georgetown has won 10 of its last 12. One of those losses was to the Cardinals, a 59-51 decision Feb. 9 at Freedom Hall. This will be only the second time in Big East history that two teams tied for first place have met in the last game of the regular season. In 1988, Pittsburgh won at Syracuse 85-84.
Every Game Counts…Still
Going into the final weekend of Big East regular-season play, not one of the top 12 seeds for next week's Big East Championship Presented by Aeropostale has been decided. Every remaining game has some postseason implications. Three teams – DePaul, St. John's and Providence – are battling for the 12th and final spot in the championship. Four teams – Louisville, Georgetown, Notre Dame and Connecticut – have gained the top four positions and will get first-round byes, but they are still jockeying for seeding position.
Big East Teams Look For NCAA Attention
As the NCAA Tournament gets closer and closer, the debate intensifies about which at-large teams will be invited. The Big East has plenty of teams worthy of serious consideration. History says that any team ranked in the top 25 of the RPI is in good shape. The Big East has six – Georgetown, Louisville, Connecticut, Notre Dame, Marquette, and Pittsburgh. The league also has other teams trying to earn the attention of the NCAA Basketball Committee.
West Virginia (21-9, 10-7) – Has won six of its last nine games. RPI is 38. Has an 8-6 record away from home. Leads the conference in scoring margin at +13.4. Plays St. John's at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
Syracuse (18-12, 8-9) – Is playing the 11th toughest schedule in the country. Has a key win over Georgetown. Hosts Marquette on Saturday.
Villanova (18-11, 8-9) – Owns wins over Connecticut, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Syracuse. Plays at Providence on Saturday.
