Varsity Sports Update

Junior women's soccer player Carolyn Blank has been named West Virginia University's athlete of the week for her play in WVU's season-opening win over Towson, highlighting West Virginia's action during the first week of classes.

Blank scored the first goal of the 2008 season on a header off a Lisa DuCote corner kick. The Toms River, N.J., native took a header from six-yards out to beat the Towson goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead. Blank took a game-high three shots against the Tigers in 78 minutes of action. She also aided in the Mountaineers' first shutout of the season. The goal was the fifth of Blank's career.

Special Notes of the Week

  • This weekend opens the 2008 season for the men's soccer, cross country, and volleyball teams.

  • The men's and women's soccer teams and the volleyball team all enter tournaments this weekend. The men' s soccer team will host the first ever WVU Classic, welcoming Lafayette, Duquesne and Binghamton to Dick Dlesk Stadium. The women's team will travel to Notre Dame, Ind., to take part in the Notre Dame Inn at St. Mary's Classic. They will face Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara, while the volleyball team will travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to take part in the Colgate Classic. The Mountaineers take on Boston College, Colgate and Kent State.

    This Week in Cross Country

    The Mountaineers are idle until Saturday, Aug. 30, when they will open the 2008 season at the Preston Relays in Kingwood, W.Va.

    The West Virginia University men's soccer team opens regular-season play on Friday as it hosts the West Virginia University Classic, presented by Jersey's Subs ... of the four total games played, West Virginia will play Lafayette on Friday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m., and Duquesne on Sunday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m. … the match against the Dukes will be televised live on West Virginia PBS.

    Last Week in Men's Soccer

    The Mountaineers tied Kentucky, 0-0, in overtime, in their final preseason match on Aug. 23 in Lexington, Ky. … sophomore Zach Johnson recorded a shutout and made six saves in goal, playing all 100 minutes … fellow sophomore Paul Paradise recorded a shot in the match.

    WVU started six newcomers, fi ve of which were freshmen, against the Wildcats … the Mountaineers only traveled 18 players, while a few key players, including senior Alex Yost and freshman Alex Silva, missed the contest due to injury … junior Chase Dewese and freshman Connor Gorman will miss the 2008 season after each tore their left knee's anterior cruciate ligament recently … both will use a medical redshirt this season.

    The 10th-ranked Mountaineers went 1-0 last week, knocking off Towson at home, 3-0, in the season- opener for both teams … the win pushed the Mountaineers to 4-0 all-time when starting the season at home ... WVU took a 2-0 fi rst half lead on goals from junior midfi elder Carolyn Blank and sophomore forward Megan Mischler … the Mountaineers continued to attack and added to their lead in the 62nd minute on a goal from freshman forward Chelsey Corroto … Blank's shot attempt was defl ected back into play where Corroto one-timed the ball into the back of the net … West Virginia dominated play, taking 20 shots and holding the Tigers to one and held a 9-2 advantage on corner kicks.

WVU will face Boston College at 4 p.m. on Friday and will take on Colgate at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Mountaineers will fi nish the tournament with a match against Kent State set to begin at 5 p.m.
