Varsity Sports Report: 09/02/08

Sophomore goalkeeper Zach Johnson has been named West Virginia University's Athlete of the Week following his performance in the West Virginia University Classic Aug. 29-31.

The Lumberton, N.J., native, recorded nine saves and one shutout in the Mountaineers' two contests, a 1-0 loss to Lafayette and a 0-0 double-overtime tie with Duquesne. Johnson was between the posts for all 200 minutes of action. Additionally, he was named to the WVU Classic All-Tournament Team.

Johnson, who made numerous diving saves to prevent the Dukes from scoring, posted his 14th career shutout which ties him for fifth all-time in the West Virginia annals.


This Week in Cross Country

The Mountaineers host their only home meet of the season and return to the WVU Agronomy Field for the Gold-Blue Race Sept. 6. The start-whistle is set for 10 a.m.

WVU opened its 2008 season with a victory at the Preston Relays on Aug. 31 ... the Mountaineers, the 2007 Big East Champions, claimed the top four individual finishes, as well as the top combined time ... redshirt freshman Ahna Lewis crossed the line first at 17:32.80, while junior Karly Hamric finished second at 18:12.50 ... the duo's combined time of 35:45.50 topped all other combined teams from West Virginia Wesleyan, Alderson Broaddus and Davis and Elkins ... redshirt freshman Stephanie Caruso fi nished third (18:14.00), while sophomore Brooke Boening crossed the line fourth (18:58.30).

Caruso and Boening, making their WVU debuts, finished second overall with a combined time of 37:12.30 ... redshirt sophomores Jamie Cokeley and Erica Arthurs finished in sixth place.

The Mountaineers return to the field Sept. 5 with the Tennessee Lady Vols Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. ... West Virginia will play host No. 22 Tennessee on Friday, Sept. 5, at 8 p.m., and Washington State on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 11:30 a.m. ... all games will be played at Regal Soccer Stadium.

Last Week in Women's Soccer

No. 10 WVU (2-1) went 1-1 last week at the Inn at Saint Mary's Classic in Notre Dame, Ind. ... the Mountaineers fell to No. 12 Santa Clara 2-1 in double-overtime on Friday, and defeated Loyola Marymount 1-0 on Sunday ... West Virginia took a 1-0 lead against Santa Clara at 36:14 on a goal from sophomore Megan Mischler, her second of the season ... SC received two goals from Santa Clara's Kendra Perry, including her golden goal in the 101st minute ... the Mountaineers out-shot the Broncos 14-10 on the evening, including a game-high five shots from Mischler ... WVU rebounded with a win on Sunday as senior Deana Everrett's header in the 86th minute propelled WVU to a 1-0 shutout ... Everrett netted her first goal of the season on a header just inside the far post at 86:58 ... WVU dominated play throughout the match, controlling possession of the ball and registering 27 shots and eight corner kicks ... the Mountaineer defense held strong, limiting the Lions to three shots and one corner kick.

WVU (0-3) dropped its first three matches of the season at the Colgate Classic Aug. 29-30 ... the squad opened with a 3-0 loss (25-27, 23-25, 20-25) to Boston College on Friday ... the host Red Raiders defeated the Mountaineers 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 28-26, 23-25, 12-15) on Saturday ...
