Stewart Inks Deal

West Virginia University Director of Athletics Ed Pastilong announced today that football coach Bill Stewart has signed his contract with the Mountaineers.

Stewart has been given a six-year contract that will pay him $800,000 this year with an annual increase of $50,000. His base salary is $150,000, and he will earn $550,000 in supplemental income for promotional purposes, including radio and television appearances with the Mountaineer Sports Network. Also included in his salary is a $100,000 annual retention fee that he will receive on Sept. 1.

Stewart will also have the opportunity to earn an additional $400,000 per year in incentives with an extra $150,000 for a national championship.

"Coach Stewart has worked tirelessly to assemble a staff, recruit an outstanding class of student-athletes and prepare for the season," Pastilong says. "With most terms and conditions agreed to in June, it was a matter of both parties reviewing the document before signing the agreement. I like the staff that he has assembled, and I look forward to Coach Stewart's continued leadership."

"As I have said many times before, I am thrilled, honored and very proud to be the head football coach at West Virginia University. Being a part of the Old Gold and Blue has always been a dream of mine," Stewart says. "I want to thank Ed Pastilong and the administration. The staff and I look forward to continue serving this University and the people of the great state of West Virginia."

Stewart was named WVU's 32nd head football coach on Jan. 3, 2008, after leading the Mountaineers to a 48-28 upset victory over No. 3 Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. He has compiled a 2-1 record so far with the Mountaineers with victories over Oklahoma and Villanova, and a defeat at East Carolina. He and his wife, Karen, are natives of New Martinsville, W.Va., and have one son, Blaine.

West Virginia returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 18, with a non-conference game at Colorado, which will be televised nationally on ESPN at 8:30 p.m.
