Gyorko on Preseason Lists

Sophomore shortstop Jedd Gyorko has been named to The Sporting News 2009 Preseason College All-America Team, revealed in the latest 2009 Baseball Yearbook by The Sporting News.

The Morgantown native joins an exclusive list that includes 16 of the nation's best hitters, pairing with The Sporting News Preseason Player of the Year Chris Dominguez of Louisville and USF's Ryan Lockwood as the only Big East representatives.

Gyorko, who batted .409 with eight home runs and 63 RBIs as a freshman in 2008, has also been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Pro-Line Athletic pre-2009 All-America team.

His standout freshman campaign led him to being named to the Preseason All-Big East Team, and he joins teammate Justin Parks as two of 205 players selected to the Brooks Wallace National Player of the Year Watch List.

In 2008, Gyorko garnered several single-season feats. His 95 base hits and 30 multi-hit games both rank second in school history, and his 62 runs scored are third on the school's single-season list.

Gyorko leads a Mountaineer ballclub that brings back seven of eight position players from last season. WVU also returns its core hitting group that finished fifth in the country in 2008 with a .341 batting average.

The Mountaineers kick off their season on Friday, Feb. 20, with a matchup against Big Ten foe Indiana in the inaugural Big East/Big Ten Challenge in St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Fla. WVU follows with Minnesota on Saturday and finishes the round-robin event against Illinois on Sunday.

WVU concludes its trip with a nonconference battle against Northwestern on Monday, Feb. 23. The contest is not part of the Big East/Big Ten Challenge.
