West Virginia assistant coach Erik Martin was as baffled as most Mountaineer fans in trying to come up with a reason for WVU's lackluster effort against Dayton.

Martin, who earned a reputation as a fierce, physical player under head coach Bob Huggins at Cincinnati, was at a loss in explaining why WVU put forth its weakest effort in two years.

"I just don't know," he said, shaking his head sadly as he discussed West Virginia's 68-60 loss to Dayton. "I can't explain it."

In this interview, Martin expands on that topic, discusses senior Alex Ruoff, and credits the Flyers for outworking and outhustling the Mountaineer squad.
