Second-Place Pick

As a sign that the Big East starts the football season with no clear-cut favorite for the league's championship, four of the conference's eight teams received at least three first-place votes in the annual preseason football media poll.

Head coach Dave Wannstedt and his University of Pittsburgh squad are the media's pick to win the conference title.

The Panthers received eight first-place votes, which tied them for the most selections on the top line with defending conference champion Cincinnati.

Despite many key losses from last season's team, which played in the Orange Bowl, the Bearcats also received eight first-place votes.

That wasn't enough for UC to slot in behind Pittsburgh, however. West Virginia took the second spot in the poll despite having only five first-place votes.

South Florida was the top choice of three voters and came in fourth in the poll, only four points ahead of fifth-place Rutgers.

In descending order, Connecticut, Louisville and Syracuse rounded out the poll.

1. Pittsburgh (8) -- 161

2. West Virginia (5) -- 151

3. Cincinnati (8) -- 144

4. USF (3) -- 130

5. Rutgers -- 126

6. Connecticut -- 74

7. Louisville -- 51

8. Syracuse -- 27
