Drilling Points Home

Each unit on the football field goes through a number of individual drills in the early periods of practice.

The purpose of individual drills is to build the fundamental moves and knowledge of calls and coverages so that each move or reaction is like second nature. Then, the goal is to meld all of the units into an efficient whole, where each group performs its role in the overall defensive scheme.

In this set of drills, defensive backs work on their backpedal and breaks while staying low -- a key to quick reactions. Footwork is also emphasized in a series of cross field shuffles and runs.
