WVU Varsity Sports Report

Junior middle blocker Lauren Evans has been named WVU Athlete of the Week for her efforts in aiding the Mountaineers to a second-place finish at the Denver Invitational this past weekend.

Evans led the Mountaineers to a 3-1 record with wins over Eastern Illinois (3-0), Air Force (3-0) and Southern Utah (3-0), and paced the team in a close loss to tournament host Denver (2-3). The Canyon Lake, Calif., native was named to the all-tournament team after posting a total of 36 kills, 13 digs and a team high 17 blocks over the course of the tournament. In the match against Denver, Evans led the team with a season high 10 kills and six blocks.


Special Notes of the Week

  • Freshman Moeryhan "Peabo" Doue had an impressive debut at DDSS with the men's soccer team, scoring the game-winning goal over Buffalo with 55 seconds left on the clock in the contest's second overtime. The victory was the team's first of the season.

  • At 5-2, the volleyball team is off to its second-best start this decade. The squad opened 2007 at 6-1, and 2005 at 4-3.


    This Week in Men's Soccer

    The Mountaineers head south to Wilmington, N.C., to compete in the North Carolina Wilmington Tournament on Friday, Sept. 11 and Sunday, Sept. 13 … on the first day of the tournament, WVU will play the host Seahawks at 7:30 p.m. … on Sunday, WVU will play Appalachian State at 1 p.m.

    Last Week in Men's Soccer

    The Mountaineers went 1-1-0 this past weekend in the annual WVU/NIKE Classic, presented by Jerseys Subs … the squad's first game of the classic was on Sept. 4, and WVU played host to No. 16-ranked UC-Santa Barbara … although WVU limited the Gauchos to just six shots, three on-goal, WVU fell 2-0 in an extremely close match … senior Ryan Gillespie led the charge with two shots … freshman Raymon Gaddis played stellar defense, stopping all offensive attacks on the right side … WVU rebounded in the second game of the tournament, defeating Buffalo 1-0 in double overtime … freshman Moeryhan "Peabo" Doue scored the game-winning goal with 55 seconds remaining in the final overtime session for his first career score … nearly 1,000 people passed through the gates for WVU's second game of the classic.

    The West Virginia University cross country team is idle this weekend … the Mountaineers are set to return to action on Oct. 2 with a trip to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Paul Shore Invitational.

    The Mountaineers finished second with 50 points at Maryland-Eastern Shore's Lid-Lifter Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 5 ... Maryland (21 points) finished first ... WVU finished in front of St. Joseph (59 points), Wilmington (127 points), UMES (142 points) and Delaware State (158 points).

    The Mountaineers return to action with a trip to Charlottesville, Va., to participate in the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic … WVU will battle No. 8 Virginia on Friday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. … the team then plays Dartmouth on Sunday, Sept. 13, at noon.

    Last Week in Women's Soccer

    No. 7/9 WVU netted two goals in each half to post a 4-0 shutout against visiting Duquesne on Sept. 3 … WVU took a 1-0 lead and never looked back, the first strike coming in the 24th minute on a goal from all-BIG EAST forward Megan Mischler … forwards Chelsey Corroto and Bry McCarthy, and defender Erica Henderson completed the scoring for WVU … Kerri Butler and Mallory Beck split time at goalkeeper to preserve the team shutout – its second of the season ... the Mountaineers out-shot the Dukes 15-5 on the night, including a 10-1 shots on-goal margin … despite holding a 23-5 shot advantage, WVU could not find the back of the net, playing to a 0-0 draw in double overtime with visiting Boston U on Sept. 6 … 10 different Mountaineers attempted at least one shot, led by forward Blake Miller who registered a career high six shots … the WVU defense was outstanding, allowing only one shot on-goal the entire match … Henderson was brilliant, making runs up field and getting into the offensive attack, finishing with three shots on the day.

    The Mountaineers competed against Duquesne, Youngstown State and Morehead State Sept. 6-7, in the seventh annual Martha Thorn Invitational, capturing three titles and two second-place finishes.

    Flight ‘A' doubles team, senior Stephanie LaFortune and redshirt junior Monique Burton, won 8-2 over Duquesne in the finals and earned the tournament title … Burton also won the flight ‘A' singles championship following her 6-1, 6-2 win over freshman teammate Emily Mathis … Mathis won her first match against Morehead State's Madeleinne Antero 6-2, 6-0, and her semifinal match, 6-2, 5-7 (8), against Youngstown State's Lauren Hankle … sophomore Kathryn Haught and LaFortune competed well in flight ‘B' singles … sophomore Veronica Cardenas and teammate junior Ashley Pilsbury will compete Wednesday, Sept. 9, for the flight ‘C' title ... the match will mark the conclusion of the invitational.

    The Mountaineers (5-2) posted a second-place finish at the Denver Invitational, finishing with a 3-1 record … WVU defeated Eastern Illinois 3-0 (32-30, 25-21, 26-24), Air Force 3-0 (25-21, 25-29, 25-22) and Southern Utah 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-18) … the Mountaineers also posted a tough match with tournament host Denver, but fell 2-3 (25-20, 23-25, 14-25, 25-19, 6-15) … juniors Abby Norman and Lauren Evans were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts.
