West Virginia University junior libero Bonnie West has been named student athlete of the week for her efforts this past weekend at the Akron Invitational. West, a Wildomar, Calif., native, led the team with 41 digs and a team high 11 service aces. West also posted two season-highs this weekend, as she recorded 22 digs in the match against Akron and five service aces against TCU.

In last week's Big East standings, West was ranked sixth in the conference in digs with 94. She now has 135 digs and 16 service aces on the season.

Special Notes of the Week

  • Six Mountaineers were named to three all-tournament teams this past weekend: Jason Bristol and Eric Schoenle (men's soccer); Carolyn Blank, Kerri Butler and Bry McCarthy (women's soccer); and Lauren Evans (volleyball).

  • Women's soccer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown needs six victories to cross the 200-win plateau. Izzo-Brown, in her 15th career season and 14th with the Mountaineers, currently holds a 194-77-28 record. West named athlete of the week

    The Mountaineers open Big East action with a match on Friday, Sept. 18, at Louisville … kickoff at Trager Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m. … two days later, the team will travel north to Ohio for a contest against Cincinnati on Sunday, Sept. 20 … the match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

    The Mountaineers tied both of their matches this past weekend at the UNC Wilmington Tournament, in Wilmington, N.C. … on Sept. 11, WVU played tournament-host UNC Wilmington to a scoreless draw … the Mountaineers held the advantage in shots (14-8) and corner kicks (11-6) … freshman Abel "Shadow" Sebele recorded a game and career high six shots, three of which were on-goal … sophomores Raymon Gaddis and Adam Mills, and freshman Travis Pittman finished with two shots apiece … in WVU's final contest of the tournament on Sept. 13, the squad finished the 110-minute match in a 1-1 tie with Appalachian State … sophomore Alex Silva tallied WVU's lone score of the game 7:12 into the match … after freshman Moeryhan "Peabo" Doue was tripped inside the ASU box, the referee awarded WVU with a penalty kick … Silva drilled the shot on the ground inside the left post for the score … Pittman finished with a team high two shots and redshirt junior goalkeeper Zach Johnson made four saves in goal.

    Freshman Bry McCarthy scored with less than six minutes to play to force overtime as No. 12 WVU played to a 1-1 draw with No. 9 Virginia Friday, Sept. 11, in Charlottesville, Va. … McCarthy silenced a loud crowd of 2,794 at the 84:41 mark after a series of shots inside the box, finishing a second attempt for the game-tying score, her second goal of the season … both teams battled through two double overtime periods, each taking three shots, before settling on the final score through 110 minutes … WVU held a 15-11 shot advantage on the night, led by Blake Miller and Megan Mischler with three attempts each … after a dominant opening 45 minutes of play by WVU, UVa returned the favor with a fast second-half start, leading to a goal in the 65th minute … a counter attack from Dartmouth propelled the Big Green past No. 12 WVU, 1-0, on Sunday, in Charlottesville, Va. … WVU played well in the first half, with seven different Mountaineers taking a shot in the opening 45 minutes … the team had several scoring chances but came up empty on all 14 attempts ...     The Mountaineers went 2-1 at the Akron Invitational last weekend with wins over Bucknell and Akron, and a loss to TCU … WVU defeated the Bison in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-17) match and the Zips 3-2 (15-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25 -21,15-13) … the Horned Frogs handed the Mountaineers their only loss of the weekend in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-9) match … junior Lauren Evans was named to the all-tournament team for the second-straight weekend.
