Smith completed 15 of 21 passes for 147 yards and a score and picked up 17 yards on six carries, but his play went far beyond the stats as the Mountaineers defeated Marshall to run their all-time record in the series to 9-0. Smith, replacing the concussed Jarrett Brown, ran West Virginia's offense well, making good decisions in the passing game and picking up a key first down on a run. His two biggest plays, however, led to two Mountaineer touchdowns.
The first, a fourth down and ten strike to Jock Sanders for 13 yards and a first down, led to Noel Devine's 14-yard score one play later. The second, a perfectly placed 33-yard pass to Alric Arnett in the back of the end zone gave WVU a 17-7 lead in the fourth quarter.
