WVU Varsity Sports Report

Junior women's soccer player Kerri Butler has been named WVU's athlete of the week for her outstanding play over the weekend. The Mountaineers tied at UConn, 0-0, and won at Providence, 1-0.

Butler made 15 saves and faced 12 corner kicks over the two matches. She logged all 200 minutes over the weekend, making a career-high nine saves and facing six corner kicks against UConn. It was only the third time UConn has been shutout this season. Yesterday, Butler recorded six saves and faced six corner kicks against Providence. The Fredericksburg, Va., native recorded her ninth and 10th shutouts of the season – the sixth and seventh of Big East play. She improved her goals-against average to 0.60 on the season. Butler has guided a WVU defense that has allowed only two goals in the last 670 minutes of play (seven games).

  • The WVU men's soccer team will honor its seniors in its last regular season home match on Wednesday, Oct. 28. First kick against Providence is set for 7 p.m.

  • WVU women's soccer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown recorded her 200th career win in a 1-0 victory at Providence on Oct. 25. The Mountaineers' quest for their second Big East title in three years begins this Sunday, Nov. 1, with a 1 p.m. match at Rutgers.
