Elson, who comes to WVU from Western Kentucky where he was the defensive coordinator, will recruit parts of Florida.

Elson was an assistant for seven seasons at Western Kentucky, and a defensive coordinator for the last two. He coached the defensive backs for the first five years of his tenure. Previously, he was a graduate assistant at Southern Illinois, where he coached tight ends, receivers and defensive backs.

"We're excited to welcome Coach Elson to the Mountaineer family," Rodriguez said in a prepared statement. "He's a bright young coach who has just won a national championship. He'll be a great addition in working with our safeties."

Elson is a 1994 graduate of Butler University, where he lettered three times, won two conference championships and played in the Division II playoffs. He and his wife Kathy have two daughters, Lauren and Jessica.
