GAME OUTLOOK

WVU Offense vs. Pitt defense

This is an area in which the Mountaineers must prevail to have a chance to win. Pitt has allowed an average of just 17.6 points per game, and only one foe has managed more than 27 points. WVU has been able to pass, power rush, break big plays and move the ball vertically at will. But those four elements have rarely come together for elongated stretches this season and this is, frankly, the last time West Virginia has a chance to genuinely impress against a solid regular season opponent. Most of the issues have been along the offensive line, which hasn't performed to expectations. It will try to match or best a Pitt foursome that has helped the Panthers rank second in the Big East in rush yards allowed per game at 102. Offensive tackle Don Barclay has the marquee assignment in defensive end Greg Romeous. The 6-6, 270 pound Pitt junior doesn't rank in the top five in team tackles. But he has the reach and rip skills to get around the end and pressure the pocket. Romeous has 31 tackles, of which 10 were for loss, including 7.5 sacks. He is quick off the snap, and his across-the-board numbers (a pair of forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, two pass break-ups, a blocked kick) showcase athleticism.

Jabaal Sheard mans the other end slot. The 6-4, 260-pounder is fifth on the team in tackles at 34 and has 3.5 sacks out of 8.5 tackles for loss. The numbers are not outstanding, but the combined pressure and ability to seal the end and collapse a pocket enables the tackles to worry more about containment than rush and often frees the linebackers to worry about the interior runs. Nose tackle Gus Mustakas, 6-3, 285 lbs., is a honed and physically mature player. The senior isn't a rock in the middle, but he is more than capable of handling whichever center WVU plays. The idea here on West Virginia's end is to get a one-on-one stalemate and not have to use a guard to engage Mustakas. Tackle Mick Williams, another senior, is a bit undersized, but uses that to his advantage via quickness. He has 13 tackles for loss, the most on the team, and could cause issues for Noel Devine in the running game.

The linebackers aren't as talented, but have good numbers because of the front four. Middle ‘backer Adam Gunn, 54 tackles, five sacks, is solid, and weakside player Max Gruder has been in on more plays consistently than any other Panther. Like the line, however, the majority of reserves are sophomores, with one redshirt freshman and a pair of seniors tossed in. That doesn't often equate to anything, but a key injury on both sides could significantly shift the game. The Mountaineers have enough skill to run well, but must get some downfield throws to have a chance. That could be a problem, as Pitt leads the league in sacks at 39. But Pitt really has not played a great schedule, and they have been challenged by any decent team faced save South Florida. The Panthers are as good as they have ever been against the run. But let's see what happens when they face a WVU coach with a power running option and who won't run into the teeth of the defense.

In the secondary, UP is led by strong safety Dom DeCicco, the team leader in tackles with 64. This is a key stat: Pitt has up front skill and enough pressure to lead the nation in sacks per game at 4.22. Yet its strong safety leads the team in tackles – normally a bad sign. It reads here this unit is susceptible to being beat, and for teams to intelligently exploit some holes in the defense. The corners, Jovani Chappel and Aaron Berry, are both seniors with major game experience. The entire unit has improved over the latter half of the season, and has not allowed a pass of 20 or more yards in its last four games. WVU seems headed in the opposite direction in big passing plays, but it threw at will against Cincinnati on its final drive. Look for the coaches to mix up the play calling and leave nothing in the chamber, as head coach Bill Stewart often notes. West Virginia has the ability to move the ball against Pitt. Watch the line play. All night. There's the obvious and overwhelming key.l

WVU Defense vs. Pitt Offense

West Virginia, after the idle week, is the healthiest it has been since the midpoint of the year. Pitt is at the peak of its blue-collar emergence in running first and throwing when needed under head coach Dave Wannstedt. Tailback Dion Lewis (5-8, 195 lbs.) is a major weapon, averaging 129 yards per game – sixth in the nation. He has exceptional vision and a good burst that mixes well with his cutback ability. He isn't overpowering like LeSean McCoy, but keeps his legs moving and is a better big-play threat. Pitt leads the Big east in rush yards per game at 187. WVU has been above average in stopping the run all year save against Cincinnati, but Pitt has more talent on the ground. Fullback Henry Hynoski (6-2, 260 lbs.) will carry a few times per game, but is routinely lined up in the I. The sophomore blocks well, but isn't a pancaker like former Mountaineer Mo Fofana. He doesn't need to be as much with three seniors on the interior of the line. Center Robb Houser is flanked by Joe Thomas on the left and John Malecki on the right. Houser, 6-2, 285 lbs., should get a great match-up from Chris Nield, who is much healthier than at anytime in the last month. Having Scooter Berry back will aid the effort, and it appears for the first time in weeks as if WVU might be able to manage a bit better along the front. This is a huge aspect to this game. The three seniors have bullied most of the teams they have played, allowing quarterback Bill Stull plenty of time and the backs an easy transition to the second level. Tackles Lucas Nix and Jason Pinkston are decent, but the interior line is by far the strength. The reserves are a mish mash of sophomores and juniors who have not seen a ton of time.

Stull has utilized the good ground game and time to throw to compile by far his best season. The 6-3, 215-pounder has completed 163 of 246 passes for 2,115 yards and an 18-to-4 touchdown to interception ratio. That's good for an efficiency rating of 159.37. Stull's height combined with an increased field vision and arm strength have made him the best full-time starter in the league this season. The senior has led Pitt to an average of 34 points per game, behind only UC in the league, and to a whopping 90 percent scoring rate in the red zone (37-of-41). His willingness to avoid a major mistake and move on to the next play has been a significant factor in Pitt's plus-eight turnover margin. West Virginia needs to create some pressure on Stull, though job one is always stopping the run. If the Mountaineers can use Neild and Berry to nullify Pitt's interior line ability, it could trigger other opportunities within the 3-3-5 blitz package. There is no way WVU can try to rush just three this game and not get beaten downfield. Stull has been sacked just nine times all year because of the line. He isn't extremely mobile, so that's not an issue, but he does throw reasonably well on the run. Contain Lewis, then get after the pocket.

The biggest target in Stull's receiving options is actually a tight end. Dorin Dickerson, a speedy 6-2, 230-pounder, has 43 receptions for 493 yards. His 10 touchdowns are twice as many as anyone else on the team and his 11.5-yard average is impressive for his position. The tight end has always been a coverage difficulty for the odd stack. That, combined with the average-to-poor (at times) downfield coverage and the ability of crossing routes to hinder getting off the field could allow Pitt to get into a run-pass groove. Flanker Oderick Turner (6-3, 205 lbs.) and split end Jonathan Baldwin (6-5, 225 lbs.) are the top two true wideouts. Baldwin averages 21 yards per catch with a long of 79 and five touchdowns. Turner has just one score and no receptions of longer than 27 yards. But his average is above 10, and he makes timely plays. Baldwin's height will be a difficult match-up, and both receivers are fast. WVU needs to play contain football and limit the big plays. That's the typical formula against any good offense, and it doesn't change here. Pressure will be paramount, and a line stalemate with a turnover or two wouldn't hurt.

WVU Special Teams vs. Pitt Special Teams

Pitt's kickoff return team ranks last in the Big East in yards per bring back. WVU has been gashed at times, but the Panthers might not have enough execution ability to make that a threat. West Virginia punter Scott Kozlowski is averaging more than 38 yards net per punt, and placekicker Tyler Bitancurt has made eight of nine tries. He doesn't have a huge leg, but it has been extremely accurate. Of course, so was Pat McAfee's until the 2007 Pitt game. Panther placekicker Dan Hutchins has converted 15 of 18 attempts, but isn't great beyond 30 yards. He also punts and averages 40.8 yards per kick. The Pitt kickoff coverage is good, and of 57 tries, Luke Briggs has put a dozen in the end zone. The category leans toward the Mountaineers, though.

PREDICTION

Pitt has quickly risen to the top 10, but hasn't played a very difficult slate. The Panthers numbers are impressive, and indeed they have stockpiled some talent and what has amounted in its final year to a good senior class. West Virginia appears overwhelmed along its offensive line, but it still has playmakers. Jarrett Brown got back to form against Cincinnati, and WVU used portions of the power running game, the vertical pass and some ball control. The Mountaineers also have an advantage on special teams and are facing a team that doesn't return kickoffs well. The home team might need a break or two, but it reads here an upset is brewing. West Virginia plays solidly on defense, holds Pitt to the low 20s and finds a way to amass 28 points itself.
