WVU Varsity Sports Report

Freshman center Asya Bussie has been named WVU's Athlete of the Week for her efforts in guiding the Mountaineers to a 3-0 week and a Nugget Classic Championship.

A Randallstown, Md., native, Bussie averaged a team-best 15.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, three steals and a block in 32 minutes per game in the tournament. She also was named the Nugget Classic's MVP.

Bussie tallied career bests of 16 points, 12 rebounds and four steals in WVU's 66-41 championship victory at host Nevada. She chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds in the opening round, come-from-behind 69-66 win over Iowa.

She also added 11 points and four rebounds in WVU's victory at Duquesne last Tuesday. Bussie has reached double figures in scoring in five of WVU's six games.

Special Notes of the Week

  • Seniors Clara Grandt, Marie-Louise Asselin and Keri Bland ran to All-America honors at the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championship on Nov. 23. The honor is the first for Grandt, and the third for Asselin and Bland; they are they only due to earn three-straight awards. The Mountaineers finished in sixth place.

  • The WVU wrestling team travels to the Cliff Keen Invitational in Primm, Nev., Dec. 4-5.

    The Mountaineers finished the 2009 season with a sixth-place (259) showing at the NCAA Championship on Monday, Nov. 23, in Terre Haute, Ind. … Big East foe Villanova took the title (86), while Florida State took second (133), Washington third (188), Texas Tech fourth (191) and Princeton fifth (251) … this season's showing is the Mountaineers' second-highest finish in school history, behind last season's fourth-place finish … the Mountaineers also finished fifth at the ECAC Championship on Saturday, Nov. 21, in Bronx, N.Y.

    Seniors Clara Grandt, Keri Bland and Marie-Louise Asselin led the team, as eached earned All-America honors … Grandt, a West Union, W.Va., native, was the first Mountaineer to cross the line, as she earned her first honors in cross country with a 13th-place finish (20:19) … Asselin and Bland became the first Mountaineers to earn three-consecutive All-America honors in cross country, finishing in 31st (20:43) and 34th (20:45), respectively … sophomores Kaylyn Christopher and Kate Harrison also had excellent races, as Christopher finished 87th (21:21) and Harrison crossed the line in 94th place (21:25) … Sarah-Anne Brault finished 145th (21:54) and Ahna Lewis finished 174th (22:13) … at the ECAC Championship, junior Jessica O'Connel was the first Mountaineer to cross the line, in ninth place with a time of 17:37, while senior Karly Hamric finished 15th with a time of 17:50 … both were named to the all-east team … also racing well was Maria Dalzot who finished in 22nd (18:00.2), Hallie Portner, who finished 40th (18:18.9) and Aubrey Moskal, who crossed the line in 43rd (18:25.2).

    West Virginia (5-1) takes on Radford, Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum … WVU will also face Maine on Saturday, Dec. 5, at noon, at the Coliseum.

    The Mountaineers (6-0, 3-0 GARC) last defeated No. 2-ranked and GARC foe Kentucky, 4691-4642, on Nov. 21 at the WVU Rifle Range … the team score is believed to be the highest collegiate aggregate total since the NCAA implemented a 60-shot course at the onset of the 2004-05 season … the total is 14 shots better than WVU's previous school record of 4677, set last year … with wins over the Wildcats in smallbore and air rifle, the Mountaineers remained undefeated in both disciplines … the Mountaineers are off to their best season start since 2003, when they opened the season 8-0 before finishing the year at 11-2.
