WVU 8-2 In First Round of EWL

The Mountaineer wrestling team recorded eight wins in the opening round of the Eastern Wrestling League tournament. WVU leads the tournament with 47.5 points. Edinboro is second with 47 points, and Pitt is third with 33.

Seth Lisa got WVU rolling with a 17-4 decision over Mike Collins of Bloomsburg at 125. Brandon Lauer followed that win up with a solid victory over Lock Haven's Justin Owens at 133, and Shane Cunana kept the Mountaineer train rolling with a 20-7 win at 141 over Bloomsburg's Mark Piermattei.

West Virginia moved to 4-0 on the evening with a 2-0 Billy Smith decision over James LaValle of Lock Haven, and then to 5-0 with a Matt Lebe pin of Charlie Brenneman, also of Lock Haven.

WVU's streak stretched to seven when Tom McMatth battered Ryan Garner of Bloomsburg 16-7 and Greg Jones curshed Clarion's David Gardner 17-2.

WVU suffered its only losses of the evening at 184, where a lethargic Ryan Wilman dropped a decision to Lock Haven's Mike Greenberg, and at 197 where Adrian Thompson was decisioned by Clarion's Eric Mausser.

WVU got back on the winning track in the final match, as heavyweight Brent Miller dominated a passive Bob Kail of Pitt, 11-4.

Action continues on Sunday with the consolation matches and championship semifinals and finals.
