Varsity Sports Update

Senior captain and middle blocker Lauren Evans has been named West Virginia University Student-Athlete of the Week. Evans, a Canyon Lake, Calif., native, led the Mountaineer volleyball team to a perfect 4-0 record this weekend as the Mountaineers captured first place at the WVU Classic.

Evans posted an outstanding .462 hitting clip on 38 kills this weekend, while also posting 11 blocks, nine digs and three service aces. For her efforts, she was named the tournament's most valuable player and highest point scorer.

Evans also earned a spot on the Big East Honor Roll for her play.

As a team, the Mountaineers posted a .254 hitting average and only lost one set all weekend. WVU defeated Howard (3-0), Buffalo (3-1), Youngstown State (3-0) and Akron (3-0).


Special Notes of the Week

  • WVU men's soccer officially opens the 2010 campaign with the Save Face WVU Classic presented by Jerseys Subs on Sept. 3, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium with No. 9 Monmouth at 7:30 p.m. The team then returns to action on Sept. 5, against No. 17 UNC Wilmington at 3:30 p.m., also at home.

  • The WVU women's soccer team also returns to action this weekend with one match, a home contest, on Saturday, Sept. 4, against Central Michigan. Kickoff at DDSS is slated for 7 p.m.


    This Week in Cross Country

    The Mountaineers begin the 2010 campaign at home with the WVU Invitational ... the meet will be held Saturday, Sept. 4, at the WVU Agronomy Farm.

    Ashtin Larkin dished out two assists to lead WVU to a 3-0 road victory over Bowling Green on Aug. 27 ... the Mountaineers built a 15-2 shot advantage after 45 minutes of play against a packed-in Bowling Green defense and finished with 26 attempts on the night ... goalkeeper Kerri Butler worked all 90 minutes to pick up her first shutout of the season ... the senior is now six clean sheets away from becoming the school's all-time shutouts leader ... Ohio State scored three unanswered goals to erase a 1-0 WVU lead in Columbus on Aug. 29 ... Bri Rodriguez netted her team-leading second goal of the season at Ohio State.

WVU will play host to Monmouth, ranked ninth in the NSCAA preseason poll, at 7:30 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium ... it will be the first match for the Mountaineers in the annual Save Face WVU Classic presented by Jerseys Subs ... WVU will play its second and final contest of the Classic on Sunday, Sept. 5, against No. 17 UNC Wilmington ... the match is schedule for 3:30 p.m.

    WVU went 1-0-1 in exhibition play ... the Mountaineers blanked Robert Morris, 3-0, on Aug. 25 ... junior Uzi Tayou and sophomores Peabo Doue and Eric Schoenle all scored goals in the victory ... WVU tied Michigan, 0-0, on Aug. 21.

    The West Virginia University volleyball team continues action this weekend at the George Mason Classic in Fairfax, Va., on Sept. 3-4 ... the Mountaineers will face UNC Charlotte at 5 p.m., on Friday, and George Mason and Army at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
