Mims, Harvey commit to WKU

The duo both took official visits to campus over the Jan. 17 weekend.

When Muscle Shoals (Ala.) cornerback Martavius Mims and Pinson (Ala.) defensive tackle Jalen Harvey arrived for their official visits to Western Kentucky over the Jan. 17 weekend, neither of them knew they were related.

But after the duo learned they were actually cousins, it seemed like it was destiny they join each other on the Hill.

"My mom and his mom were talkin at the hotel and somehow it came up," Mims said. "The first thing I said to him was how it'd be cool to play on the same defense together.

"We made the decision this morning (Sunday, Jan. 19) to commit."

The 5-foot-10 cornerback had other offers from Minnesota, Navy and Boise State among others, while Harvey flipped his commitment to WKU from South Alabama.

A two-star tackle listed at 6-foot-2, 300 pounds, he also held offers from Boise State and Arkansas State.

"The coaching staff is amazing," Mims said. "I love the atmosphere of the campus and the city."

Harvey also was complimentary of WKU's coaches, many of whom were retained under new head coach Jeff Brohm after Bobby Petrino departed for Louisville.

"Coach (Don) Dunn told me a lot about himself and I wanted to play for him," the tackle said. "It's a beautiful school."

Both of the new commitments confirmed they'll shut the recruiting process down and plan to sign with WKU on National Signing Day, Feb. 5.

According to Scout.com's rankings, the Toppers currently hold the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in both the Sun Belt and Conference USA with 16 days remaining until NSD.
